Steel Walls
Just noticed the achievements bit on the WoT profile, must have been one of the updates changed it and yet again I didn't notice!
Anyway, I noticed I seem to have an awful lot of Steel Walls, obviously due to driving mostly assault heavies.
I'm not on a bragfest here though, I think I might just be playing a bit too aggressively since if I'm averaging one every 39 battles and that indicates I must be dying a lot since I always attack. What's your average number of battles per Steel Wall and your survival rate(mine is 31%)?
I can't be arsed trawling through everyone's profiles so I thought I'd ask here and work out if I should camp more

I am more the medium/light driver so got 119 battles/steelwall for 3331 battles and a survivalrate of 34,67% (you now scout waaah enemy runaway thing). Also I am much more around in low tiers. Steel Wall "king": KV-1 so far with 14 of 28 in total.

Hi, I have 58 Steel Wall. 101 battle/Steel Wall and a survivalrate of 33%. I usually play in HT, more often in the IS line.
Whatching your post I think I need to angle my tank better
Cheers.

Re: Steel Walls
76 steelwalls in 9086 battles, one per every 120 battles (wow that was actually lower than i thought).
My rate of survival is the stunning high number of 25%
(My ELC AMX has a survival rate of 8.7% - which pulls me down a bit).

Re: Steel Walls
62 SW in 7904 battles means 1 SW per 127 battles. Since I was primary arty/medium player, it is nothing special.
EDIT: oouh I forgot, 41% survival rate (quiet good as arty got usually slaughter and other tanks I play aggressively)

Re: Steel Walls
hmmmm, 110 steel walls in 12,784 battles, thats one every 116 battles and im exactly twice as likely to get a steel wall as a top gun. Apparently i play less than 1 game in 3 with a heavy tank (29%) and most of those are American, so steel walls are quite unlikely for me. Survival rate, lets not go there.....but its getting better

Hiya,
I have just 89 in over 17000 battles . But percentage wise I have not played heavies that often.
I expect this to increase now i have unocked several of them .

25 SW in 4500 battles, it's 1/180 Survival rate of 29% Not very good score, but I've played only 17.7% games with Heavys, or I'm just looking for excuses
~20% survrate and 59% winrate for me ;>Brainfarter wrote:(My ELC AMX has a survival rate of 8.7% - which pulls me down a bit).

Re: Steel Walls
153 Steel Walls in 11093 games and 42% survival rate. I tend to get less now days. I used to provoke bounces from lower tier enemies a lot. Nowdays I like to play bit more aggressive and push on them instead. Only trying to provoke bounces from higher tiers or superior forces. All that seems to be cutting down the number of Steel Walls.

3030 battles and 45 Steel Wall, which is about a Steel Wall every 67 battle. 25% survival ratio, I'm usually quite aggressive.

38 steel walls in 16,937 games... driving scouts and paper tanks it doesn't help, survive ratio is 37%.

Re: Steel Walls
I have 9026 battles and 87 Steel Walls, so I'm averaging 1 Steel Wall every 103 battles. I am also very aggressive player (you'd never guess it looking at my TC tactics), I tend to push onwards whenever possible. However, I tend to drive more mobile tanks with less armor as for me, evading shots is better than bouncing shots.
My survival percentage is 39%, which is relatively high in comparison to players with 57% win ratios, hence fully accurate with the notion I like to evade hits.

Re: Steel Walls
Well I've tried hanging back a bit for a couple of days after I posted this and besides being boring bollocks my w/r, eff, wn6/7 all fell slightly and it took more games to get the 300k. Survival rate went up a bit though
I guess I'm going to keep pushing hard in heavy armour and hope the girls follow in the random chaos!

1 in 1812 battles!
As a TD player it's not too suprising. I have a feeling it may have been in a Hetzer which can be quite bouncy

Re: Steel Walls
1 Steel Wall every 115 game. Play heavies 37% of the time. 38% Survival rate. My playstyle is defined by "why did I die now" mixed with some games where I actually feel I did something right. Tend to hold back too much.
Intrigued by what Vallu said - "provoke bounces". Wish I knew how to do that. More than sidescraping? I usually try to force misses, with varying success.

Re: Steel Walls
Difficult to think of how to teach it as it's not something that you can easily set up, but if you know you can present the enemy tank with a part of you that you know it can't penetrate then you can be aiming or even firing while it takes a harmless shot at you. You can't obviously just sit there but keep moving back after your second shot and the enemy will still think it's in with a chance and do the same thing again, so there's a good chance you can get 4 shots in for every two of his if that makes sense?Lycantia wrote:

Re: Steel Walls
Thanks for the answer. Is this comparable with going hull down with ie. the T29 and wiggling the turret in random intervals?

Re: Steel Walls
Few examples for provoking bounces.
Street corner, me in my Tiger against a IS. I park in the corner only showing my front armour in almost auto-bounce angle, so the 100mm armour becomes 250+ armour (careful not to show the axle. IS shoots and bounces, I get 1 free shot at him, 2 if I'm fast enough. Not everyone falls for it, but it's worth a try. Works against higher tiers also, but you need to be more careful. Doesn't work as well with a pike nose, but if you position correctly it can be done also. Tanks with front axle going over the front armour are bad for this as you can get perma-tracked easily.
Hilly/bumpy terrain. You want to go over a hill with a Type 59, but someone is waiting for you to come over so they can take a shot at you. First show just your turret and try to provoke a shot. Second show your upper front plate. Due to coming over and the sloping of the front armour it will have a ridiculous angle and will bounce almost anything. Be careful not to show your lower plate. After that you can go over the hill and get up close and personal like Type is meant to be played.
Again a corner and there is someone waiting around the corner. You have a tank with wide tracks but poor side armour like M103, even better if you have platoon mates. You don't try sidescrape too much because they might penetrate your side armour. Instead you park in a corner so only your track is showing. Straight from the front so He has no change to damage you, only to damage or destroy your tracks. They shoot your tracks and if you aren't tracked you can turn a little bit and move like you would be sidescraping and take a shot and go back. Works well if you have repair skills, so you can repair before enemy reloads.
If you have platoon mates any of these will be a lot more useful as the enemy will get shot by 3 tanks instead of 1. The good thing is that the enemy is reloading so you have plenty of time to aim carefully and go back. It helps always if you wiggle or go back and forth while doing any of these. Although sometimes I just don't move and try to make the enemy think I've done a mistake by leaving part of my tank visible. Whether that is actually a factor I have no idea, but it's nice to think so.
Of course you can't do all of these in all tanks. Some are better suited for them than others.

I was really lucky to survive this but it's a good example of how well angling works, I might even have provoked a few bounces. It's also a great example of how dumb a team can be!
