A certain nab nuked my laptop memory with a gold-plated shell.

But worry not, I shall be returning shortly (hopefully with Alienware 17 laptop...anyone got any views on that by the way?)

That is all I have to say on this topic!

Post  RoninRage Wed Sep 25, 2013 11:03 pm

I thought of getting the Alienware 17 last year when the Ivy Bridge CPU's came out also tried one (a friend of mine has one) it is an awesome machine but i did not want to spend 3K € one a Laptop and got for the Asus G75 for 2,5K still enough for me (doing developing stuff sometimes and gaming with it)
But I have to admit the Alienware display is better and well it has more nice play around stuff. The measured performance difference between my friends AW and my Asus where not that huge to justify the 500 € more in price. The "biggest" difference was the display but well my opinion and tests are of last year. So possibly not valid anymore.

Compared to the "High End" Lenovo Thinkpad I use for work the Alienware and the Asus are absolute beasts.

Get yo ass down to the local pc shop and resolve the isse immediatley!

Alienware laptop, awesome! I have bought an ASUS i5, 6gb ram, nvidia 8600 (a lt east i think) gpu laptop and it will hold 'whilst on AC' performance mode and medium/high settings a solid 50fps. The only thing that I need to change is the HDD, it sucks, so a 256gb SSD driver needs to be slapped in. The alienware spec should obliterate this laptop, so have fun Ding.

For games, the i7 will offer a negligable improvement over the i5, in fact only mutlithreaded apps will benefit from i7 over i5

I have a HP Pavillion dv5 to spare if you want!

It boasts an amazing 13 to 25fps with the old engine of WoT, I definetely recommend it!

I am thinking about getting the EUR1499 Alienware 17 laptop on this site: http://www.dell.com/ie/p/alienware-17/pd

Looking at the specs I do not think there's a major difference in specs performance as compared to the more expensive versions of it right?

I'm actually not a massive gamer, but I do insist on reliability, durability of laptop (due to moving around a lot) and ability to sustain heavy-duty workload for an extended period of time in my machines, and I heard Alienware laptops due to its gaming capabilities fits that role, so I decided I'll try one, not to mention I'll naturally be playing many games on it.

Had a look on that well I am not an expert so thats just my opinion

Well if possible for you, you might go for the Full HD display. It most of the time it does not only make a difference in resolution but also on brightness and other stuff.

The GPU I think is not worth that upgrade price.

Other Upgrades like RAM and and SDD or such are much cheaper when bought else where (if you need it) and normally it does not break the warranty to equip it afterwards. The 17" has a second slot for HDD(as could be seen on the possiblity equip it with a raid) so it does not make sense to buy the 64GB SSD Cache because for 150 bucks you also might get a normal SATA3 ssd but with 240 GB)

Cheers, thanks for the advice Ronin! Smile

I'm thinking about getting the laptop at the default specs, without upgrades. The only extra thing I might buy is the overpriced carrying bag... because for its size I don't think any of my current carrying cases will do.

I don't mind paying a few extra bucks, after all, I presume some money is paid for the brand name (urgh...), but I don't want to get ripped off immensely either, if it's about EUR 200 difference, then I'll settle for Alienware, any more than that and I might consider elsewhere. The problem is I am no computer whizz either, and I do not know the very latest in everything in the tech world, so I went with the safest bet for those who wanted what I wanted...Alienware lol!

Back in the time when things where ok for me, I could afford an Alienware instead of my PC.

Apart from the price (no-one can tell me that these things are not overpriced as hell, we all know that the extra 10% in performance costs an arm and a leg), which was not really an issue at the time (i.e. 6 years ago) one big problem I faced is that there is no way I could show the alienware in any proffesion related activity!

It's like having dinner at the Georges V in Paris and arriving with your missus in a Subaru Impreza WRC, with led lights, rotating rims, spoilers, subwofers and the whole lot!

And this is why my dearest sir you will probably never have dinner with your missus in Georges V in Paris Razz

Burger King might be a more suitable option... Pizza Hut when you really want something posh!

Never liked fancy restaurants anyway. So if I had to choose between having dinner in Georges V in Paris or a Subaru Impreza WRC, I would choose the Subaru. Smile

@Off Topic: Even if Aston is more about understatment I would prefer Lamborghini Aventador Spider for summer ... but in Top Gear they meantioned that it is a bad car because it does not try to kill you any more
and an RS6 Avant for winter and as car for the dog.

@On Topic:
Ding I just remembered one thing Dell and Alienware have voucher codes and there are several overview sites (at least in german so i am almost sure that they offer them international). At the moment there is a special offer (as meantioned above for AT,DE and CH) to save 100€ for all AW products more expensive than 1199, 200 € for all AW products above 2499€ and free shipping

So there is money to save by using google.

Post  RoninRage Fri Sep 27, 2013 7:18 pm

I use a ... sort of ... laptop (3,5 kg 17" 1 possibly 1,5 hours on battery runtime ... i would call it desktop replacement) decided for it because I am carrying it arround (doing develpment shit not for the company or playing some games with friends) once or twice a month.

Another reason for me for the laptop was that I don't need to care about upgrading it. Playing on a Laptop for me does not mean that I need to play on the 17". Got a tripple display setup so additional 27" TFT's attached.

In 2-3 years i just grab it pass it on to my parents and buy a new one. Before this I spent so much time of my life putting custom rigs together figuring out why this RAM does not work with this motherboard and shit that I am just not interessted in it anymore.

BTW the 17" Alienware is also more a desktop replacement than a laptop.

And we came back again to my point! How much of a clown do you want to look in uni? There is a similar Toshiba (I like toshiba, because their laptops can endure a lot of abuse as opposed to HP or ACER), with 90% the alienware performance, a fraction of the price and it does not look like a flying saucer!

If you are thinking about it, if my memory is good it is the Qosmio or something like that.

Actually, I study in the business school. Down there, if anybody dares to make fun of my laptop which is an essential part of my work, then they will have something to hear about. It isn't as coincidence I'm not as poor as regular students but also keeping to the fact I like to be a bit different in acceptable boundaries.

Anyways, regarding the Toshiba, I looked into various brands during my research, I could have custom built it but the wait time on that is unacceptable unfortunately. I appreciate the fact my purchase is very pricey, but I need something to perform to and thus far there has been little success in finding a replacement...urgh... Sad
